Stomach flu is medically know as Gastroenteritis. It is an intestinal infection marked by watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever. Although its called stomach flu, it isn’t the same as influenza which affects your nose, throat, and lungs.
To ease the symptoms at home you should drink plenty of fluids and eat bland foods. Try a BRAT diet of:
Bananas Rice Apple Sauce Toast
For nausea and vomiting stick to the so-called convalescence diet: clear liquids. Also, consider oral rehydration solutions, such as Pedialyte. They have a balance of salts and sugars. Forget sports drinks. Some have too much salt or too many carbs. The big thing is avoiding dehydration with gastroenteritis.
Time can help. The nice thing about the GI tract is, most of the time, the body is able to care for itself. The body is trying to wash out the infection or irritation and return your GI tract to its healthy state. When it’s trying to do that, you have to be nice to your body and give it hydration. Avoid anti-diarrheas to give the body time to heal itself.
Even though the body can heal itself, when you need to see a Doctor for severe symptoms, come to Quick Care where an appointment is never required.
